live writer screencapture experiment
Friday, April 20th, 2007Let’s try entering text first.
*Now* we’ll try a screencap.
This is a windows live writer test post
Friday, April 20th, 2007Trying Microsoft’s offering. Very preliminary findings below.
Let’s try inserting a picture.
Well, that was easy. Will have to see if I’m still happy with it after posting….
Findings so far:
Pros
- setup was painless.
- has a nice UI
- has a "post to draft" publish option which I believe BlogJet currently lacks.
- Has comment and ping options
Cons
1) Unlike BlogJet, it doesn’t retrieve existing posts for editing
2) Like my WP install itself, it’s forcing me to proper-case my title. :(
3) Doesn’t have date options for future dating posts.
Interesting - seems to have picked up styling from my blog.
To do next - check out plugins mentioned here
More to follow.
HOW TO: insert multiple carriage returns / line breaks into a Wordpress post
Friday, April 20th, 2007This is a note to myself, and a temporary hack found at the Wordpress.org forums until I have time to learn a bit more and correct. The hack below only works on submit; retrieving the post back into the editor fubars the code again (as does toggling between visual and code views.) I need to follow-up and dig into TinyMCE a bit to see if I can figure out what’s up.

For future ref, the Google query that turned up the results I needed is here.
Update May-1-2007: I’ve noticed a few people arriving here via Google queries appearing to have the same problem I was having, so I just wanted to add a note that I have been able to resolve this problem by replacing the default rich text editor in Wordpress (TinyMCE) with FCKEditor, which has fixed most of my formatting problems, and allows me to insert extra white space / carriage returns / line breaks to my heart’s content.
See? ;-)
This solution does have it’s own issues - the largest for me being some weird loading issues in Firefox that I have not yet taken time to resolve, but it’s working 100% in Internet Explorer, which is good enough for my purposes for the moment.
If anybody knows what the Firefox issue is, or has questions re: the above, please feel free to leave me a note here - I’ve turned on comments for this post.
How do people find the time for this?… ReluctantBlogger.com - new and improved.
Thursday, April 19th, 2007Ah… that new car blog smell…
If you’re reading this, then you’ve successfully made it to Reluctant Blogger’s new Wordpress-installation home. I’m still getting moved in, so there will undoubtedly be some kinks. Please feel free to use the spiff contact form if you notice anything in particular that’s badly broken.
A lot of stuff has happened this week while I’ve been knee deep in PHP, so hopefully I’ll have a chance to write about that soon. For now, though, it’s 3am - so this blogger is off to bed. Sleep well y’all.
Paul
ps - to the readers who sent me email - thank you - and clearly I’m a shmuck for taking so long to get back to you. Email replies will be forthcoming shortly. Thank you for your understanding. :)
WP Cache installation instructions for future reference
Saturday, April 14th, 2007The original, complete version is located at Ricardo Galli’s blog.
=================
Installation

Upload to your plugins folder, usually
wp-content/plugins/and unzip the file, it will create awp-content/plugins/wp-cache/directory. -
If you have Gzip Compression enabled turn it off (in Options->Reading).

Activate the plugin on the plugin screen.
-
Go to “Options” administration menu, select “WP-Cache” from the submenu, the plugin will try to autoconfigure everything. Google buys Doubleclick… my idea’s looking better all the time, isn’t it Mister Softee?
Friday, April 13th, 2007Via afternoon TMswarm: Google Buys DoubleClick for $3.1 Billion
The usual suspects have the details. Pete says this is part of the ongoing “implosion” at Microsoft, and Hipmojo headlines it as Google blocking Microsoft as well.
Also some very interesting discussion at Paul Kedrosky’s (be sure to scroll down and read the comments) which echoes some of my own thinking:
I knows me some ugly…. and THIS blog is ugly…. woo hoo.
Friday, April 13th, 2007
I created this blog on a whim a couple of weeks ago, but it seems to have stuck, so it’s time to get a little more serious. On the off chance anyone has actually subscribed, I just wanted to add a quick note here to say that this blog will be migrating to a dedicated Wordpress installation shortly; a friend has carved out some space for me on one of his servers at the NOC, so I’ll be using that, I think.
I used a custom domain from day one, and I’ll be setting up redirects to keep links working - - the only thing that may break would be feeds, since I didn’t get Feedburner set up right away.
This blogs permafeed is located here if you’re looking for it.
Thanks!
If they’d only had a backup…
Friday, April 13th, 2007Warning: this blog post will probably only be interesting to other once and former messaging geeks. From Ed Brill:
I’m not writing about politics….
Perino said a White House review showed up to 5 million e-mails to and from as many as 1,700 executive branch employees might have been lost when the administration converted from Lotus Notes to Microsoft Outlook in 2002 and 2003.Oops.
Microsoft vs. Google wrap-up
Thursday, April 12th, 2007
I received what was, to me, some pretty remarkable feedback on this post. Aside from linked discussions, I also exchanged email with Barry Ritholtz, got commentary (albeit very short! :-) )from Craig Newmark, and saw this discussed in languages I don’t speak and behind doors I can’t open. Oh - and it turns out that at least one person blogged a similar idea before me (thx for the email, Naval.)
All things considered, a pretty impressive showing from the Live Web for a n00b blogger’s one-off post that he wrote before going to bed last Tuesday. Thanks very much to everyone - the discussion was fun! I had hoped to do all of this attention justice with a proper post-mortem write up, but work and a minor family crisis conspired to keep me otherwise occupied, so a quick-and-dirty one will have to do for now.
