Miscellaneous Links Thursday - “It’ll have to do.”

Penelope Trunk a.k.a. the Brazen Careerist has a useful little essay on perfectionism up at Yahoo finance.  Almost as interesting to me as the original piece is the response from the readership there. Two stars based on > 1000 votes?…

It’s reminiscent, to me, of the surprisingly hostile response that was generated a while back by Kathy Sierra’s "Angry/Negative People are bad for your brain" essay. I’ve had a lot of exposure to this kind of dynamic over the course of my life, yet for some reason I’m still frequently surprised by it.

I have no new, intelligent conclusions to share on this topic today - - I’m just thumbtacking the subject for future consideration. The old-perfectionist-me would never would have allowed himself to pubish a blog post without a proper conclusion… :-)

Also, just as an aside, that’s why this blog isn’t really "about" anything, and on a given day you’re every bit as likely to see a nonsensical one-off comment about Linkrot Pandas (that’s going to be the name of my new band, btw) as a thoughtful essay. I made a commitment to abandon perfectionism, at least with regard to personal publishing. As with many bad habits, the only really viable strategy (for me, anyway - I’m weak willed ;) was to go cold turkey.

I’ll completely understand if you don’t like it. Frankly, I’m not sure I do either… but it was the only way I could be sure that this would happen.

I’m always a sucker for a good basketball analogy.  "Get your fouls" from Redeye VC is a great one.

Using blogs for alternative purposes/blog as information hub –> first known blog as vc pitch.

Some miscellaneous lazyweb questions:

  1. Why does clicking on my blog name in Technorati here return their version of a 404?
  2. What’s a guy gotta do to get his website screencap updated? Alexa and Technorati both have pictures of the old godaddy parked domain page, rather than the live site.
  3. How can I configure Wordpress to automatically trackback ping Typepad blogs when I link to one in a post?
  4. Replacing TinyMCE (Wordpress’ default rich-text editor) with FCKEditor has admirably fixed the lion’s share of formatting problems I was experiencing, including allowing me to insert "unnecessary" whitespace/carriage returns to my heart’s content.  Only one problem keeps me from recommending this to everyone using WP - - it doesn’t seem to work in Firefox 2 for Windows…  at all.  Further digging needed, this is YAP in the meantime (yet another placeholder ;-)
